Online directories – such as Google Places, Yellow Pages, Super Pages, Yelp – help businesses/customers connect and positively impact a company’s SEO value. Essential for businesses, these online directories: (1) lock up brand names to prevent someone else from using them; (2) can send new traffic to a website.
Three elements critical to an effective directory strategy:
1. Directory Quality
Focus on the directories that are indexed by Google and in your niche.
Use directories in your category. Test the relevancy by searching queries
for your keywords to see if the directory appears.
Create a diverse link profile that includes different keywords with interesting titles and descriptions, which target groups searching broad subjects (using three words or less) and groups searching a specific market (using more than three words).
“Directories actually offer an opportunity for marketers to reach new markets
through a more diverse link profile, so using them for this purpose is a smart idea.”

It is important to remember that SEO is not a goal. It is a process/tool that drives traffic and increases popularity for a website/company.
